Treason of the Hero
Lou Sihao and Du Zhongyuan are two generals of the North Qi Kingdom. They meet a mountain witch who prophesies that Sihao will be made prince and may even become emperor. Indeed, King Gao Lin does install Sihao as a prince and Zhongyuan as a marquis. Heeding the witch’s prophecy, Sihao’s wife,Lan, convinces her husband to assassinate the emperor and seize the throne. Sihao kills the emperor while hunting at night and accuses the crown prince of the murder. Though suspicious, Zhongyuan pretends to persecute the crown prince while trying to come up with a plan. Once he has taken power, Sihao orders Commander Liang to have Zhongyuan killed. After ensuring his son’s safety, Zhongyuan commits suicide.
On the day of the enthronement, Sihao is scared out of his wits by the ghost of Zhongyuan. Sihao‘s wife is also haunted by the ghost of the commander she had killed for his knowledge of her husband’s murder. The army encounters an omen of imminent calamity. Zhongyuan’s son, Du Wei, launches an attack alongside the former crown prince. Yingling is hanged by the ghosts of the deceased king Gao Lin, commanderYufeng, and the marquis Zhongyuan.Sihao fights Du Wei but is defeated. He blames the witch before dying, but the witch points out that he has been led astray by his own evil thoughts and desires. The ghosts reappear, and the despairing Sihao falls from the city tower and dies.
