牡丹亭驚夢/牡丹亭

太守之女麗娘年方十六，一日與侍婢遊牡丹亭，睡夢中邂逅書生柳夢梅。麗娘醒後病危，臨終前自畫丹青一幅。三年後夢梅借宿梅花觀，拾得丹青，覺似曾相識且漸生愛意。麗娘鬼魂現身述遊園驚夢之前塵，夢梅本欲殉情，被麗娘阻止並囑他明日破棺助己回生。夢梅與麗娘成親後遷往杭州，杜夫人及家眷偶遇麗娘，並得悉夢梅高中狀元，隨即囑咐眾人回淮陽稟告杜父。

麗娘老師誤以為夢梅盜墓棄屍，到杜府欲揭發夢梅的罪行。杜父又聞有書生自稱新姑爺求見，怒不可遏，以為夢梅被鬼魂迷惑，遂吊他在天窗下拷打，並決定狀告朝廷。金鑾殿上宋帝設計試探麗娘，最後確認麗娘回生，賜封為淮陰公主，並承認她與夢梅的婚姻。經麗娘勸解，杜父與夢梅冰釋前嫌，一家團圓。

An interrupted Dream in the Peony Pavilion

Sixteen-year-old Liniang is the daughter of a prefect. Touring the Peony Pavilion with her maid one day,Liniang dozes off and meets a young scholar named Liu Mengmei in her dream. When Liniang awakes, she falls seriously ill and paints a self-portrait before she dies. Three years later, when lodging at Plum Blossom Temple, Liu picks up the portrait and finds the woman in it familiar. He falls in love with her instantly. Liniang’s ghost appears and tells the scholar about their previous encounter. Liu intends to die for love, but the ghost of Liniang stops him, asking him instead to break her coffin the next day and resurrect her. She comes back to life, and the couple marries and moves to Hangzhou. Liniang’s mother and other family members come across Liniang and learn that Liu wins the highest honors in the imperial examination. The mother sends the others to go back to Huaiyang and deliver the good news to Liniang’s father.

Mistaking Liu for a grave robber, Liniang’s teacher visits the prefect to report Liu’scrime. Hearing that a scholar is asking to see him who claims to be his son-in-law, the prefect is outraged. Thinking that Liu has been possessed by spirits, the prefect has him beaten up and left him exposing to the severe sun. The prefect then takes the case to the emperor. In the imperial palace, the Songemperor tests Liniang with a trick and confirms her resurrection. The emperor makes Liniang princess and acknowledges her marriage to Liu. Liniang persuades her father and Liu to reconcile and the family is reunited.
