白兔會

劉知遠落拓無依，幸得為沙陀村李文奎員外收留，並將女兒三娘許配。李員外死後，夫妻遭兄嫂欺壓。聞說瓜園有怪，反派知遠前往看管。知遠降服瓜精，並尋得寶劍天書，遂別妻往汾陽投軍。

丈夫走後三娘更受兄嫂折磨，日汲水、晚推磨。後在磨房產下一子，因磨房無剪，以口咬斷臍帶，取名咬臍郎；未及逾月，被兄嫂發現，拋入荷池，幸老僕救起送往邠州交父親撫養。

數載後劉知遠已官任節度使。劉承佑（咬臍郎）出獵在外，因逐白兔目見三娘在外衣衫襤褸，汲水辛勞，不禁心生憐憫，上前詢問因果。及返家中把沙陀村中三娘井邊汲水、咬指寫書、托其尋夫問子之事稟告父親。劉知遠得書，坦言向子說道三娘乃其生母。於是父子趕往沙陀村迎接三娘，終得一家團圓。

The Reunion by a White Hare

Liu Zhiyuan is a poor and homeless man. A landlord in the nearby village, Li Wenkui, takes Liu in and marries him to his daughter, Sanniang. When Li dies,Sanniang’s brother and his wife mistreat the couple constantly. Hearing of a melon demon infesting their field, the brother and his wife send Zhiyuan to look after it. Zhiyuan subdues the monster and, in addition, finds a sword and a divine book. He bids farewell to his wife and joins the army in Fenzhou.

Now that her husband is gone, Sanniang suffers more abuse from her brother and his wife, being forced to draw water by day and grind grain by night.Sanniang gives birth to her son while in the mill and names himYaoqilang (meaning “boy biting the umbilical cord”) because she has to sever the umbilical cord with her teeth for lack of tools. Before he is a month old, the child is discovered by Sanniang’s brother and his wife. The couple throws the baby into the lotus pond. Fortunately, an old servant saves him and delivers him to his father in Fenzhou.

A few years later, Liu Zhiyuan has been promoted to the rank of governor. While hunting a white hare, his son, now called Liu Chengyou, comes across Sanniang, who is drawing water in tattered clothes. Taking pity on her, the child approaches the woman to learn about her life. She bites her finger and writes a letter with her blood expressing her desire to locate her husband and son. She gives the letter to Yaoqilang. Back home, the son tells his father about the woman. Zhiyuan reads the letter and tells his son that the woman must be his mother. The father and son arrive at the village to take Sanniang back, and the family is happily reunited.
