時值宋末，元軍南侵，宋帝被迫至崖西。民婦許大娘繼承先夫遺志，組織義軍抗元。張達為前潮州統領，因皇帝昏庸而屢遭貶逐，如今以布衣之身，與妻子陳璧娘協助許大娘軍務。一日，欽差到來傳達聖旨，希望張達率義軍勤王。眾鄉親慷慨激昂，決心報國，說服張達不計前嫌，帶領當地子弟兵出征。數月後，前線告急，許大娘與壁娘率鄉親前往救援。扺達之時，張達已兵敗被俘，元軍將領張弘範以張達性命威脅璧娘率眾投降，眾人不肯屈服。張達勉勵眾人繼續抗元，璧娘救人不得，唯有忍痛撤離。張達死前奮起殺死變節的欽差。元軍持續進迫，義軍勢窮。最後，璧娘為掩護眾人撤退，下戰書挑戰張弘範。眾人乘隙突圍，璧娘壯烈犧牲.。

Farewell, My Husband

Towards the end of the Song dynasty, Yuan troops invade the south, and the Song emperor flees to Yaxi. Carrying on her late husband’s work, Madame Xu, an ordinary woman, organizes a volunteer army in resistance against the Yuan troops. Zhang Da, the former commander of troops in Chaozhou, has been demoted several times by the muddle-headed emperor. Together with his wife, Chen, the now-commonerZhang assists Madame Xu in military affairs.

One day, an imperial envoy brings the message that the emperor wants Zhang to lead the volunteer army to his rescue. The locals become impassioned by the news and resolve to serve the country. They persuade Zhang to forget past grudges and go out to battle as head of the army.

A few months later, the situation at the front turns critical. Madame Xu and Chen lead locals on a rescue operation. By the time they arrive, Zhang Da has been defeated and captured. Yuan General Hongfanthreatens to kill Zhang if Chen and her men do not surrender, but the volunteer army will not comply. Zhangencourages the locals to continue to fight. Unable to rescue her husband, Chen has to retreat. Before his death, Zhang kills the traitorous imperial envoy.

The Yuan troops press on and the volunteer army is doomed to failure. To cover her men’s retreat, Chensends a letter challenging the general to a battle. Her soldiers break the siege, but the heroine, Chen, dies for her country.
