碧玉簪

吏部尚書李廷甫有一女秀英，李夫人欲將之婚配其表兄顧文友，唯父女二人均厭惡其不務正業。文友向廷甫祝壽，驚見秀英美色，向她提親卻遭拒絕。時王裕夫婦偕子玉林到來拜?，廷甫賞識玉林才貌雙全，向王裕提出聯姻。文友深恨玉林橫刀奪愛，施計買通孫媒婆以拆散鴛鴦。新婚夜，媒婆偷取秀英的碧玉簪，並將文友偽造的信函留下，令玉林誤會秀英不貞，對她非常冷淡。一月後歸寧之日，玉林為破壞秀英與文友的「私情」，強令她即日回返，不得留宿娘家。秀英被逼拋下母親不顧，遂埋怨夫婿陷她於不孝。廷甫往探視女兒，見其顏容萎靡痛心不已。玉林揚言要休棄秀英，並取出「情書」為證。其後廷甫審問孫媒婆，終於真相大白，然廷甫卻攜女兒回府不欲她再受折磨。玉林追悔莫及，其母勸他勤讀詩書，他日金榜題名以求夫妻團聚。玉林果高中狀元，並向秀英表示誠心悔改，最終二人團圓再續婚盟。

The Green Jade Hairpin

Xiuying is the daughter of Li Tingpu,Minister of Personnel. The minister’s wife wants to marry her daughter to cousin Gu Wenyou, who falls out of both the daughter’s and father’s favor for doing no honest work. Impressed by the beauty of his cousin, Gu proposes at the minister’sbirthday, only to be rebuffed.Wang Yuis present at the birthday party with his wife and son, Yulin. Seeing that Yulin is talented and handsome, the minister proposes engagement of his daughter and Wang Yu.

Begrudging Yulin for stealing his love, Wenyou bribes Sun, the matchmaker, to attempt to break up the couple. On the wedding night, the matchmaker steals Xiuying‘s green jade hairpin and leaves a letter forged by Wenyou, causing Yulin to behave very coldly towards his wife when he suspects that she is unchaste. On the day for the bride to visit her parents a month later, Yulin, who believes that his wife has had an affair with Wenyou, orders her to return on the same day instead of spending the night with her parents. Xiuyingagonizes over her husband’s decision to prevent her from performing her filial duty.

Tingpu pays a visit to his daughter and is deeply saddened to see how haggard she is. Yulin threatens to divorce Xiuying, showing the fake love letter as the proof of her infidelity. After questioning the matchmaker,Tingpu discovers the truth. The minister takes his daughter back home to protect her from further abuses. It is now Yulin’s turn to regret his rash actions. Yulin’s mother, however, persuades him to apply himself to his studies so as to pass the imperial examination and win back his wife. Yulin comes out first in the highest imperial examination and makes a sincere apology to his wife. The couple is reunited.
