Group Profile

The Chinese Music Group of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is a student orchestra of the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, established in 2013. The members of the group are all studying in different departments of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. All musicians have rich performance experience and are active in different Chinese music groups in Hong Kong. Many of the members have also won awards in the Hong Kong Inter-school Music Festival.
The goal of this group is to promote the teaching of traditional Chinese music. Through the various Chinese music courses offered by the Department of Music, students are exposed to musical instruments and scores collected by the China Music Archive, and receive guidance from many experts on performance ability and style performance. The types of music involved include Guangdong Nanyin, Cantonese Opera, Chaozhou music, Kunqu opera and Jiangnan Sizhu, etc. At the same time, members also participate in discussions on the differences in the cultural background of music genres and the relevance of music genres, thereby broadening their perspectives on Chinese music.
In addition to traditional repertoires, the CUHK Chinese Music Group is also keen to perform modern Chinese music. Its performances include: local composer Dr. Ng King-Pin's adaptation of "Nightclub 1960", Professor Chung Yiu-kwong's "Looking at the Moon and Listening to the Wind", and Professor Chen Yonghua's "Nanlian Pond" ".
Since 2013, the Chinese Music Group of CUHK has held concerts on campus every year. During this period, he cooperated with the Institute of Chinese Culture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to hold a series of lunchtime concerts from 2013 to 2014. The group has also cooperated with the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Zhuyun Xiaoji and other organizations and groups, and participated in off-campus performances many times: In 2017, it was invited by Shatin New Town Plaza to participate in its "Music in the Community" performance, bringing traditional silk and bamboo music and new Chinese music to the public, and actively connect with the community.
In addition, the group was invited to perform and hold workshops in Vienna and Oxford University in 2015 and 2016 respectively; it also performed at Tsinghua University during Christmas in 2017, sparing no effort in promoting the development of Chinese music in the world.
